Mechanical Marvel - Evaluation (3D)
The theme for the 3D work
remained the same as the 2D work which was mechanical marvel.
My idea was only slightly developed over the course of the 3D modelling process. When I say slight, all I did was exclude parts of my Photoshop concept I knew would be needless and take too long to model, animate and render in Maya. That is the only development I made in respect of the 3D stuff.
In terms of reference material it was the same as my 2D work. The reference materials I did use was the artist work of Aaron Chen. Reason being is because Aaron's work conveys the same message as I would like mine too as well. Not only this but the general minor aesthetics like rivets, rust etc.
The reference material was not only a major inspiration but gave me an insight to 3D work that I never knew before in the sense of the way the model was structured and put together. Needless to say my reference material was definitely a major influence and was very useful.
Apart from minor visual details such as rivets and rust this affected my design and 3D model greatly because like I stated previously I found massive help and relief in seeing how his model was made and structured which better helped my understanding of how to construct mine.
It did greatly. Most of my skill development for the 3D work was developed from what Chris and Simon taught me with some of my own self initiative and personal learning. That paired with my research into 3D artists like Adam and Aaron along with Chris & Simon, my development in 3D modelling was pushed further than what I would've gotten with no research, of course.
Artists like Adam Wesierski and Aaron Chen helped inspired me of course. The reason I focused specifically on these two is because they captivate the same look & feel I want for my robot without copying them directly of course. In terms of art cultures and movements, the digital art culture is of course what inspired me the most in terms of the 3D modelling side of things.
These artists used overlaying polygon techniques in Photoshop and Maya, very similarly to me. Tools wise I believe it is standard pen and tablet for both Photoshop and Maya work, This again was another reason why I chose these artists was because their wasn't anything they did that I couldnt.
It didn't change or shift during the 3D modelling process since I was happy with it by that stage.
I wished I looked at more artists during my research phase. I felt I overly used Aaron and Adam's work throughout both the 3D and 2D stages. So, I do wish I looked at more artists.
Colour and tone are the only formal art elements I used as apart of the 3D modelling process.
Some of the visual languages that I researched throughout this 3D modelling process were my use of shapes and materials. I did this with my use of the blinn materials. Blinn materials make a asset shiny or reflective, almost metallic and I used these as a form of visual communication because without using these materials I wouldn't have been able to communicate the fact that my model is metal. This was used deliberately since I didn't have to communicate it was metal but more so I wanted to.
I wanted to convey the same meanings in this 3D model as my 2D work, that feeling of age, history and story through the medium of war in which this machine would be used for. I believe I managed to convey these messages very well. Probably better than my 2D work because I created a more realistic and authentic model which of course gives that realism and executes the message.
I am very, very happy with my final piece. The part I am most proud of is my ball-joint that connects the lower body to the upper body. This in the original concept wasn't so noticeable due to the angle, however I managed to incorporate this massively into the model itself and I am very proud of it.
I feel in comparison to the artists I researched I successful communicate the message I originally intended. It was the same as with my 2D piece. I wanted to convey the messages of age, history and story. Having completed this successfully during my 2D piece and having my 3D piece excel that of the 2D one, I feel I have communicated my message and compared to my artist research very well.
There is nothing I would change, no.
